Mala Making Workshop
About the Half-Day Course
A mala (prayer beads) is a string of beads used for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra. For Buddhist practitioners, this ritual object is revered as precious, becoming more powerful and meaningful the more it is used. Often the mala is used to bless other people who are sick or dying or held by the person in difficult circumstances therefore it is often carried on their person or kept very close by.
Malas are made using beads of a wide variety of colours and materials, with a typical mala traditionally having 108 beads. Instruction will also be given on how to make a bracelet mala. There will be a selection of beads and materials available to choose from on the day.
During this workshop, you will have the opportunity to make a mala to use as your personal mala. Some brief instruction will be given about the meaning of mantra, Sanskrit for ‘mind protection’, and the power and benefits of mantra recitation. On the workshop we will apply a specific mantra to recite and learn how to use our mala to help us focus.
This workshop will be taught by Buddhist teachers Harumi Hasegawa and Kelsang Pagma.
